Stars Align for Perigon

Marcus Timson

I recently visited Trichord in Farnham, Surrey and learned more about the progress of Perigon, an innovative business that produces digital 3D object printing technology.

So often with innovation, it is a confluence of factors which leads to success. The right technology matches the needs and trends of the market at the right time, and this certainly seems to be the case with Perigon.

Forbidden Cocktails exploit the mass customised potential of Perigon technology

I first met Alan Bridger at Perigon via Sihl, one of our FuturePrint partners. Perigon is a JV between Trichord & Sihl. Frankly, when you think of the potential and the talk of digitally customised printed products, I have not seen a huge amount of tangible evidence of success and usage. Until now.

As Alan makes very clear, Perigon is not ‘direct to shape’ printing with inkjet. And while digital print is used in the process, this innovation is as much about how the film is applied to the object, the amazing visual impact the process achieves, and then how the technology completes the production process. It is clever and appears relatively straightforward to use, yet the output and the creativity it can unlock from a design perspective are quite inspiring.

So much so that recently Forbidden Cocktails successfully worked with Perigon. This is a story of ingenuity and artistry, inspired by Brian Smith, Founder of the Blind Pig, Jersey Channel Islands and brought to life by the talented team of bartenders and shareholders of Sippin Gin distiller; Michelin star trained chef Dany Lancaster.

Forbidden recognised the critical importance of standing out from competitors and emphasising the premium character of their brand. Eye-catching and stylish designs are part of their brand identity.

Each drink stands for a special taste with a unique story. The special bottle design reflects this uniqueness. This ensures a high recognition value for the customer: Forbidden remains in the memory!

Perigon: A Simple Process

How does Perigon work?

  • The desired image is digitally printed on a thermoformable film with special inks.

  • The toppers and the foil are placed in the Perigon vacuum oven.

  • The temperature in the oven is increased until the film is soft and flexible.

  • At this point, a vacuum is created and a soft film is formed around the product. It fits like a glove.

  • Diffusion starts: this means that the ink is gaseous and transfers into the amorphous structure of the substrate.

  • In this way the desired image transfers from the film to the topper.

  • That’s it…Ready…!!!

Liberating Design

Perigon provides the solution for ideas, markets, and products, to inspire consumers to make the world around them unique, by getting creative and designing products.

Customisation and limited edition designs are gaining more and more importance in all areas of life, across all generations. With the patented and proven Perigon process and technology, every complex shape, regardless of material, can be designed whereby the production volumes no longer play a role.

 Crocs and Tejumola Butler Adenuga

Back in May 2022, we visited Selfridges, a famous London Department store where Perigon was showing how they are able to make customised Crocs in collaboration with the inspiring artist, Tejumola Butler Adenuga.
