FuturePrint Virtual Summit: Q&A With Paul Jenkins, ThePackHub

We spoke to FuturePrint Virtual Summit speaker Paul Jenkins, Managing Director of ThePackHub, about the impact of COVID-19 on shopping behaviour, how the pandemic is affecting sustainability, and how his business is adapting.

Don’t miss Paul’s session, Insight in Packaging: New ideas and Key Issues, with Sihl’s Steffen Ohr on June 4th.

Check out the full schedule here.

WHAT IMPACT IS COVID-19 HAVING ON THE PACKAGING SECTOR?

The packaging industry, like all others is affected by Covid-19.  Single use plastic is being used more with reports of reusable bags being banned in some markets. Shopper behaviour is changing - Tesco reported near doubling of online deliveries, and the return of the weekly shop. Recycling is not a priority at the moment for some. Corrugated & glass shortages are being reported. Perhaps we will see more of a hygiene focus in future? Some innovation projects are currently not going ahead or being paused, and product ranges have been rationalised. Some tamper proofing is coming back into vogue.

WHAT KIND OF LONG-LASTING IMPACT ON THE INDUSTRY WILL IT LIKELY HAVE?

Business should return to something like normality when this all ends, but the lockdown has opened up new ways of working, and new processes that will impact on how we work when it’s all over. We may not see the large supermarket ranges return.

HOW HAVE YOU RESPONDED TO THE CRISIS?

Loads more zoom calls! ThePackHub has adapted our face-to-face events to a webinar model. We have become even more active on social media to ensure that we are still in our customers’ minds.
